Why go on? March 25, 2008

i get hundreds of visitors a day @ this site, and people are hotlinking to it
left and right, but no comments, no thanks, no nothin’.
Does anybody out there even like what i’m doing here, or is this site just a source of free music and photos for your LiveJournal or MySpace or Facebook profiles or message board posts to try and help you look cool to your friends?
i’m tired of always sending letters and never getting any back.
i think i’m gonna quit this exercise in futility and delete everything pretty soon, so download all you can while you still can, kids…

Theo Ellsworth is a self-taught
artist living in Portland, Oregon.He writes and draws comics,
makes art zines,
draws constantly,
and on occasion,
teaches workshops.
* He does invisible
* performance art
* that no one will ever see.
* He has a miniature city
* inside of his head that is
* overrun with funny monsters,
* yet he still manages
* to come across as
* a semi-normal guy.
He is abnormally fond
of clouds, and wants to
build things out of them.He is prone to
fits of whimsy,
and tends to have
weird dreams.He is a co-founder of the
Pony Club Gallery and Store.

‘Hope’ | 18″ x 24″ | watercolor on 100% cotton paper
My political art is inspired by the scary state of this nation these days. Most of my peers don’t vote. They’re afraid to learn about how government works, or even think about politics. They don’t want to be responsible for possibly making bad choices, so they don’t make ANY choices.
I’m very, very passionate
about our rights as citizens
to speak out and make
changes in this country.
I want my art to evoke some
thought from whoever views
it. I don’t care if it makes
them mad or happy, or even
if they agree with me or not.
I just want people to
DO SOMETHING —
get involved, take charge
and help make a difference.
I think we all have the ability to change things for the better, but too many people just watch American Idol
and eat at McDonald’s…The people in my art represent all of us, the American people, in all states and phases — people who have the power to right wrongs and help others. They represent anyone who believes democracy is a good and inspiring notion and want to use that power to help make this country and this world a better place.

Second Line… December 2, 2007

. “Two years ago I was watching
. all the Katrina coverage on TV
. and knew another family coming
. down to do construction for the
. relief effort,” says Peter Spring.
. “I thought I’d join them, then
. thought about what I could offer
. with my own special skills
. and tools.”
Now living by the Mississippi
River in a warehouse that he
turned into a workshop and
performance space, Spring,
57, has donated hundreds
of musical instruments to
musicians, schools and churches
in New Orleans, while teaching a new generation of artists how to play. He’s been doing it since October 2005.
. His mission is personal.
. In 2002, Spring’s 22-year-old
. son, Steven, a talented
. musician in his own right, died
. of a rare form of bone cancer.
“The most amazing thing about my son is that not once through all the pain of his cancer did he complain or waste any time,” Spring says. “He just played as hard as he could right up to the end.
That’s what I had to live up to.”
Crushed by the loss of his son three years earlier, Spring was adrift when the floodwaters of Katrina began washing over the birthplace of jazz. Inspired to help, he founded the nonprofit Steven Spring Foundation, which he named after his son. Spring held a fundraiser in his hometown of Ashland, Oregon and began collecting instruments. By the end of September 2005 he had collected over 60 instruments — from pianos to flutes — loaded them all in a trailer, and started his first 2,800-mile road trip to Louisiana.
. “I feel a huge debt to this
. city — particularly the
. African-American people —
. for inventing jazz, which I think
. is the best thing that’s come out of America,” says Spring, who plans to stay in the city for three more years. “I have absolutely no doubt that I am in the right place doing the right thing.”
Spring arrived in New Orleans
soon after the city reopened,
at a time when most of New
Orleans remained uninhabitable.
On his first night, Spring repaired the piano at Donna’s Bar and Grill, a well-known jazz club on Rampart Street that had flooded after the hurricane. The next day he joined New Orleans’ first post-Katrina second line parade on Bourbon Street, marking the passing of the storm and the start of the city’s rebirth.
“At every point after deciding to do this, fortuitous things have happened that make it seem like it’s all been planned,” Spring says.
“Of course, that’s the essence of jazz.”

From bud break to bloom, fruit set to veraison, ripe into harvest; I watched and studied the Bishop Creek Vineyard for the last two growing seasons. I fought with the weather to achieve the photos I wanted, much as the grapes fought with the weather for the conditions they needed.
The 2006 summer was a long, hot summer that allowed them to take their time and get as sweet as they wanted.
The 2007 summer was moodier and created awhole different style of beautiful characteristics. Yet, at all times, the grapes were growing, changing, and becoming something
of their own.

There has been a “Last Thursday” on Alberta Street
since 1997. Art on Alberta sponsors the event,
which is held every month year round. The galleries,
studios, restaurants, and other art venues on the street
open their doors for a celebratory evening of art…

. In the same way that poetry
. distills layers of emotion
. and meaning in a few lines,
. I developed a passion for
. condensing my fascination
. for the visual world into a few
. intensely meaningful marks.
. By simplifying the figure, using
. as little information as possible,
. and discarding excessive detail,
. what remained were the
. essential shapes depicting
truth in the form of abstraction.

Pearl Storefront by Minh ~ click on any image to see a larger photo
I wake up and fall asleep thinking about music most days. I can’t imagine how much sadder my life would be without music, or what would keep me sane.
From a physics standpoint, photos and music represent exact opposites - one occupies space but no time, the other time but no space.
I think photos are cool because they will never change, they give us a sense of control over the 4th dimension
by allowing us to capture an instant of it, holding it back against time’s forward flow.But nothing beats music.
