Song of the Day: Blind Willie McTell - Searching the Desert for the Blues May 11, 2008

You may search the ocean,
you might go ‘cross the deep blue sea…

'Hot Shot Willie' - Atlanta, 1940

But Mama, you’ll never find
another hot shot like me.

Apollo 15 lunar mission - July 1971

i followed my baby from the station to the train,
and the blues came down like dark night showers of rain.

Blind Willie McTell - Searching the Desert for the Blues (2.9MB mp3)

recorded February 22, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia

West Valley, Mars - November 2007

i left her at the station,
wringin’ her hands and cryin’…

oh lordy lord --- lord, lord, lord...

i told her she had a home,
just as long as i got mine.

Victoria Crater, Mars - Fall 2007

that's why i'm searching these deserts for the blues...

Song of the Day: Björk – Innocence May 5, 2008

When i once was....

.

i once had no fears,
none at all.

And then when
i had some…

To my surprise,
i grew to like both:

scared; or brave
without them.

.

.

fear is a powerful drug. overcome it, & you think that you can do anything...

The thrill of fear —
thought i’d never admit it…

The thrill of fear —
now greatly enjoyed with courage.

should i save myself for later... or generously give?*

*

Neurosis
only
attaches
itself
to
fertile
ground,

where
it
can
flourish…

*

*

innocence..

.

When i once was

fearless,

innocence roared.

.

.

let's open up...Still amazes…

.

.

.

.

Untouchable,

innocence.

It is still here —

.

.

.

.

but in different places.

Quote(s) of the Day: from Another Roadside Attraction May 4, 2008

Posted by ~V~ in : Politics, Images, Philosophy, Quote of the Day , add a comment

“Normally,”

ISL: lurking threat or mostly harmless?

said Marvelous,

“the Institute
concerns itself
with probing
relatively specific
problems
and
situations.”

E Pluribus UnumFor example, the State Department
and the Defense Department signed
a joint contract with us for a study of Iceland.Lofsöngur

They wanted to know where
Iceland was going in the modern world,
whether she would be likely to constitute
a threat.

Lýðveldið ÍslandConsidering her history and her racial character, her current state of economic growth, scientific activity and political ambitions, what should be America’s long-range policy in regards to Iceland?

In our twice-weekly seminars, where
we would pool the results of individual research and think sessions, we dined on fish heads and mead and piped in rímur music, that’s how immersed in Iceland we were.

'In God We Trust'. We even turned the air conditioner up as high
. as it would go to get the feel of the climate.
.
. The assistant director caught a terrible cold
. and missed ten days.
.
. That study was top secret, naturally,
and I’m violating security by mentioning it,
but what the hell.

You see, generally, what kind of projects we undertook?

Logic only gives man what he needs. Magic gives him what he wants.“Yes, I see,”
said Amanda.

“It sounds ever so important.”

Was Amanda giggling
or clearing her sinuses?
Marx Marvelous
could not tell which.

“It is necessary
that man extend his vision
beyond the political realities
of the present,”

said Marx,
somewhat defensively.

“When science can assist him in that, it is his duty.”

The function of the artist is to provide what life does not.

YouTube Video of the Day: Georges Méliès - An Up-To-Date Conjuror May 3, 2008

aka L’Impressionniste fin de siècle, 1899

the 'Cinemagician'Georges Méliès (1861–1938)
was a French filmmaker
famous for leading many
technical and narrative
developments in the
earliest cinema.

He was born in Paris,
where his family
manufactured shoes.

He was very innovative
in the use of special effects.
He accidentally discovered the stop trick, or substitution, in 1896, and was one of the first filmmakers to use multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted colour in his films.

'Le Voyage dans la Lune' aka 'A Trip to the Moon'Because
of his ability
to seemingly
manipulate and
transform reality
with cinematography,

Méliès is sometimes
referred to as the
“Cinemagician.”
