True story:
About a year ago, i was reading a paperback copy of Jailbird,
and i somehow lost the book while out running errands one day.
i thought i had left it behind in a certain store, so i went back
the next day to check if it was there.
Nobody working at the store had seen it, and i left disappointed,
thinking the book was gone for good.
But as i crossed the street, retracing my steps from the previous day,
i saw the lost book laying in the middle of the turn lane —
battered, rain-stained, and crisscrossed with tire tracks.
i stopped there in the busy street as the traffic rushed past me,
reached down, and picked the book up.
The binding was cracked, and the cover and many pages from the
first few chapters were missing, but strangely enough, it was
opened to the same chapter where i had left off reading…
i straightened out the worst of the bent pages, brushed off most of the
dirt and grime, and took the book back home with me to finish reading it.
And it was a great book.
So it goes.
