Hi V / OPW,
On behalf of XL Recordings and Warner Bros Records, many thanks for plugging The Raconteurs … .. thanks also, on behalf of the labels and the artist, for not posting any pirate links to new material although, if you / your readers would like a good quality, non-pirated, preview clip, a widget of the promo video for “Salute Your Solution†is available for fans and bloggers to embed at http://www.theraconteurs.com/widget.html .

(i think your caps lock key might be stuck, btw) ~
When i asked last week for more comments from visitors to the site,
this wasn’t exactly what i was hoping for, but given the nature of what
i’m doing here, i guess it was to be expected.
And i couldn’t have written a better storyline if i’d tried: Self-styled
“web sheriff” moseys up to self-styled “artist/philosopher/raconteur”
& purveyor of ‘pirate’ materials on www street @ high.noon and
delivers an ultimatum…
In a post featuring Lady Justice, no less.
i’m not tryin’ to cause a ruckus or step outta line here, sir,
so here’s my response:
As far as the thanks for promoting The Raconteurs, you’re welcome —
they’re an awesome band. But i wonder if you even took the time to
read/listen to the post carefully: ‘Level’ is not “new” Raconteurs material,
it’s from their first album. i posted the song because i know that the
band does have a new album out and i wanted to remind people that
there are also some excellent songs on their earlier release, as well as
do my part to contribute to the “rah rah, Raconteurs” buzz that’s
going on over tha intarwebz right now.
More blog mentions = more whuffie, ya know…
But in respect for your indirectly stated wishes, i removed the download
link to the mp3 (assuming that’s what you were referring to as a ‘pirate’
link) and replaced it with a link to search Google for ‘Raconteurs Level’.
i didn’t make it a ‘+ torrent’ or ‘+ mp3′ or ‘+ download’ link,
because i don’t want to encourage ‘piracy’.
However, i’m leaving the streaming embedded player up, so that
people can still listen to the song and if they like it, hopefully buy
more songs from The Raconteurs, or better yet, see them perform
live or buy their merchandise.
Since you’re a player in the music biz, i’m sure you know that that’s
how the vast majority of musicians ever REALLY make any money —
the true ‘pirates’ of the music world are the major record labels,
who can only be bothered to throw a few pennies of each $15 to $20+
CD sale to the PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY CREATE THE MUSIC.
i guess they need all that extra cash to pay all the lawyers’ bills
generated from suing music fans…
BTW, i checked out the widget link in your comment, but it really doesn’t
help me with this particular post. i’m not a record company lackey or
rabid fanboy who’s satisfied with a promo pack and a pat on the back.
It’s great that there’s an embeddable widget available to promote the
latest Raconteurs video, but that’s not what i’m trying to do here.
i’m doing this site for the love of music and art, and i post what moves
my heart, mind, and spirit. i’m making new art with other forms of art
as my raw materials, using the latest tools available to show the ancient
and enduring connections between all things. And if it was possible to
embed an ‘official’ streaming music player with the song(s) i want to use
to get my message across, you know i’d be all over that…
Since you brought your concern (& commendation - i think) to me here
in the comments section, i’m addressing it in the comments. i hope the
removal of the download link to the mp3 is a satisfactory resolution. If it
isn’t, you’re more than welcome to leave another comment or to contact
me via email — there’s a human-readable email address in the sidebar.
“yarrr”s truly,
Cap’n ~V~
I love this song, thank you for posting it. It always makes me think of a paranoid relationship.

Now THAT’S more like the type of comment i was hoping for…
Thanks for the insight.
i agree — there is a spooky, edgy, paranoid/obsessive tension
running through this song, but it’s also catchy as hell.
Jack White is a musical and lyrical genius, imho,
and a true artist for all times.
